Jewellery Care

All of the pieces of jewellery at Smyth & Weir are made using vintage, antique and modern solid Gold or fine silver (925, 935, 900) - no plated jewellery here!

Other materials include diamonds, pearls (freshwater, cultured and seed pearls) Coral as well as Paste, a special type of cut glass which emulates a variety of gemstones.

Paste jewellery dates back to France during the 18th century and were often more labour intensive to craft than Gemstone jewellery, as the Paste glass had to be expertly cut and polished by hand. This made the appeal even greater with many in Parisian high society deeming Paste jewellery superior to the real thing!

Antique and vintage jewellery care :

Treat your antique or vintage piece with care, they are old and very delicate.

To clean , gently use a soft jewellery cloth to polish.

Do not shower /bathe while wearing and please take care not to drop on hard surfaces.

Pearls , coral and turquoise should be kept away from direct contact with perfume , moisturiser and water.

What Can I expect from my Antique / fine vintage piece of jewellery?

All antique / vintage jewellery will have normal signs of age , any imperfections only enhance the beauty and individuality of the piece. Brooch / pin conversions often may have a little bruising on the reverse due to the removal of clasp or pin - this does not detract from the piece.

The photographs form part of the description , please study to see  the unique personality of the piece.

If you are expecting an item to be like new then perhaps vintage / antique jewellery may not be for you.
